Tornado Analysis and Trends

Detailed charts and visualizations revealing tornado patterns by intensity, seasonality, and impact. These analytics show historical trends and unique characteristics of tornado activity in this region.

Monthly Distribution

Shows tornado frequency across different months of the year, highlighting seasonal patterns. This information helps identify peak tornado seasons and periods of heightened risk.

Annual Tornado Trends

Tracks tornado occurrences and fatalities over time, revealing long-term patterns and significant events. Toggle the injuries data to see additional impact metrics.

Note: This chart shows annual trends for the selected metrics. Use the buttons above to toggle which data is displayed. Tornado counts use the left axis, while fatalities and injuries use the right axis.

Property Damage Trends ($ Millions)

Visualizes the financial impact of tornadoes across years using a square root scale. This approach ensures both major damage events and smaller impacts are visible on the same chart.

Note: This chart uses a stretched Y-axis (square root scale) to better show both small and large property damage values across different years.

Tornado Intensity Distribution

Shows the breakdown of tornadoes by intensity rating (EF/F scale). This distribution helps understand the prevalence of different tornado strengths and their relative frequency.

Note: The F-scale (pre-2007) and EF-scale (post-2007) ratings have been combined for simplicity. Rating 0 combines F0 and EF0, Rating 1 combines F1 and EF1, and so on. While the exact wind speeds for each rating differ slightly between scales, they represent similar damage levels.

Understanding Tornado Intensity Scales

Tornado intensity is measured on two scales:

F Scale (Fujita Scale)

Used before February 2007:

  • F0: 40-72 mph - Light damage
  • F1: 73-112 mph - Moderate damage
  • F2: 113-157 mph - Significant damage
  • F3: 158-206 mph - Severe damage
  • F4: 207-260 mph - Devastating damage
  • F5: 261-318 mph - Incredible damage

EF Scale (Enhanced Fujita Scale)

Used after February 2007:

  • EF0: 65-85 mph - Light damage
  • EF1: 86-110 mph - Moderate damage
  • EF2: 111-135 mph - Considerable damage
  • EF3: 136-165 mph - Severe damage
  • EF4: 166-200 mph - Devastating damage
  • EF5: Over 200 mph - Incredible damage

The EF Scale was implemented to create a more accurate representation of tornado damage based on improved knowledge of wind speeds and structural engineering.
